First, we all know there are a lot of problems with sound on Ubuntu.
Ubuntu is short on qualified manpower in this area, and most are
volonteers.

The HDA codec, as the original poster has, is problematic on all Linux
distributions as every new model of laptop that comes out needs a different
quirk to be applied, which must be done manually. For more information, see
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/tiwai/docs/HD-Audio.html

Meanwhile you can help out by trying the Karmic distribution and see if sound
works there, or try to help yourself, e g by trying the instructions listed at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto
