The one difference I spot with system-tools-backends is with the process
state code.

Prior to first attempt, (fresh boot) it is S+ (Interruptible sleep, is
in the foreground process group).

Subsequently, it is Ss (Interruptible sleep, is a session leader).

I am not savvy enough to determine if this is normal or if it is an
indication or clue as to the problem.
