My problem was that the whole module is not shown in "SCIM Setup" - "IM Engines" -> "Global Setup" - "Chinese (simplified)". I just saw four modules, none of them written in Chinese characters, and none enabling intuitive pinyin-based input. After I compiled and installed scim-pinyin from source, the method appeared.
