Thanks for the suggestions.  It's possible that it might be something to
do with gnome-screensaver, but it's set to "blank," and if I'm only away
for a couple of hours I can usually still unlock the computer (although
the response seems a bit sluggish).

I'll give the newer radeonhd driver a try (I should use the version
marked for Hardy, right?).  I have a deadline for work coming up, but
when I have a window of opportunity (hopefully later in the week) I'll
test-drive Jaunty as well.
