I have the same problem. I could play flv files before upgrading vlc to version 0.9.4 through update manager.
The packages that were installed were: vlc-data (0.9.4-1ubuntu3) libvlccore0 (0.9.4-1ubuntu3) libvlc2 (0.9.4-1ubuntu3) vlc-nox (0.9.4-1ubuntu3) vlc (0.9.4-1ubuntu3) I tried to look up the logs from when I upgraded (which was before I re- installed the package), but I couldn't find them. The message that I get in the terminal is almost identical except for the version number and the second last line (which is in english on mine): [00000001] main libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface.
