about using different repo:: anyone can create a repo and store packages in it. for example, webupd8 has a repo if its own where they store packages like vlc, gimp etc. so, any fork of ubuntu can make a repository of its own and put packages there (even if those packages are available under ubuntu repositories)... repositories cannot define whether a linux distribution is stand-alone or not. even Ultimate Edition and SuperOS (both spinoffs of ubuntu - like linux mint) have their own repos.. Ultimately, linux mint is a fork of ubuntu. it uses the same base system as ubuntu, similar softwares, similar plymouth ,.. just with some extra packages and functionalities.
