DUTIES : Research

You develop a research programme at KU Leuven, Technology Campus Geel in the
domain Machine Learning focussing on applied research. You collaborate with
other research groups at KU Leuven and other universities. You provide
additional expertise, thereby strengthening the fundamental research, and you
identify topics within existing research programmes that are relevant for your
own research, thereby providing your own research with a fundamental basis.
Examples of possible research programmes are:

- research into classification models that can be applied in real-time to
various kinds of sensor data, and learning algorithms for such models; here,
limitations may exist in terms of computation power, memory, or energy usage,
especially in the real-time component;
- research into adaptive models that can be trained for use in specific
circumstances with limited supervision;
- learning causal models for industrial processes, that allow the cause of a
defect to be automatically determined;
- developing systems for big data analysis in specific sectors or application
domains, by applying expertise on generally applicable fundamental results,
algorithms and methods.

You develop a network, both within the academic and non-academic world, to
strengthen the collaboration between both, among others for the valorisation of
scientific results. You are able to acquire competitive funding, both
project-based government funding as well as industrial funding.
Opportunities exist for collaboration with, among others:

- research groups at Technology Campus Geel: `electronics for harsh
environments’, `sustainable food production including supporting mechatronic
systems’ and `sustainable thermal energy’,
- EAVISE, Technology Campus De Nayer: `Artificial Intelligence and Computer
Vision’,
- Research group DTAI of the Department of Computer Science, focused mainly on
fundamental AI research.

DUTIES : Teaching

You provide high-quality education at Technology Campus Geel, in the Faculty of
Engineering Technology, mainly in the bachelor and master programme
Electronics-ICT, in the domain of computer science/information technology. You
teach the subjects `Programming and algorithms’, `Databases’ and `Object
oriented programming’ in the bachelor and `Machine learning’, `Big data
analysis’ in the master. You clearly commit yourself to the quality of the
programme as a whole.

You contribute to the faculty’s and the university’s pedagogical project by
guiding student projects (for example bachelor’s and master’s theses) and
supervising PhD students.

You develop your teaching in accordance with KU Leuven’s views on activating
and researched-based education and make use of the possibilities for
educational professionalisation offered by the faculty and the university.

Your teaching duties are limited in the first years of your appointment. In
your further career, the faculty will also pay a great deal of attention to the
balance between research and teaching time.

DUTIES : Service

You are prepared to provide scientific, societal and internal services.

You play an active part in profiling the Faculty of Engineering Technology
towards new students and the wider professional field by participating in open
days, networking events and fairs,...

REQUIREMENTS

Sciences, Computer Science or an equivalent degree, and a PhD where the subject
of your doctoral thesis relates to the research field.
- You have a strong research track record in the discipline, evidenced by your
publications or by your research experience in industry. International and/or
industrial experience is an important advantage.
- You have verifiable qualities related to academic education. The ability to
immediately take on a wide range of educational tasks is an advantage.
- You possess organisational skills and have a cooperative attitude. You also
possess leadership competencies in a university or industry context.

not speak Dutch (or do not speak it well) at the start of your employment, KU
Leuven will provide language training to enable you to take part in meetings.
Before teaching courses in Dutch or English, you will be given the opportunity
to learn Dutch resp. English to the required standard.

OFFER

We offer full-time employment in an intellectually challenging environment. KU
Leuven is a research-intensive, internationally orientated university that

You will work at the KU Leuven Technology Campus Geel which is one of the
operational sites of the KU Leuven multi-campus Faculty of Engineering
Technology. The campus emphasises optimal guidance, support and supervision of
students.
Depending on your record and qualifications, you will be appointed to or
tenured in one of the grades of the senior academic staff: assistant professor,
