I have two postdoctoral positions in my group at the RIKEN center for AI
project in Tokyo. I also have positions for senior researchers (more than 5
years of experience). If you have questions, please email me at
emtiyaz.k...@riken.jp. For the application procedure, see the end of this
email. More details about the group and our research is on my webpage:
https://emtiyaz.github.io/ The webpage of our center:
http://www.riken.jp/en/research/labs/aip/

We are accepting applications for the following projects:

   -

Project 1: Scalable algorithm for uncertainty estimation on large and
   complex Bayesian models.
   -

Project 2: Sequential learning through exploration (e.g., by choosing
   relevant data or models).

Selected candidates are expected to carry out independent research,
collaborate with other researchers in the center, and publish her/his
findings in the top machine learning conferences. Working hours are relaxed
and at your own discretion. The center also provides travel funds to attend
conferences. The position is meant to further the careers of young
researchers who wish to pursue a career in academia.

The candidate is expected to be an expert in one or more of the following
areas: approximate Bayesian inference (including variational inference and
MCMC), numerical optimization, deep learning, Gaussian processes,
probabilistic graphical models, Bayesian optimization, reinforcement
learning, online learning, active learning, and state estimation and
controls.

The candidate must have a PhD (or expected to get one in the near future)
and have published their research in the top machine learning conferences
(NIPS, ICML, AIStats, UAI, ICLR, etc.). Candidates who have worked on
applications of machine learning are also encouraged to apply.

We provide competitive salaries and also cover part of the housing,
commuting allowance, relocation costs, and health insurance. The position
is offered for one year and is renewable for up to 5 years.

Our center is fairly new (started last year, September 2016) and is well
funded (the AI project has around 26M dollars a year of public funding).
The office is located in the center of Tokyo. The center has also built up
a good computing infrastructure for deep learning.

To apply please follow the instructions for “Openings for Research
Scientists or Postdoctoral Researchers” in this page:
http://www.riken.jp/en/careers/researchers/20161128_2/

The following documents are required:

   1.

Complete CV (with photo and email address)
   2.

List of publications: Photocopies of three major research papers. Circle
titles of five major papers in the list.
   3.

Two different letters of recommendation including one by your supervisor
   4.

Research in the past and research plan (3 pages in A4 size)
   5.

Your research plan must include outcome expected within a few years from
   your appointment (maximum 5 years).

Note: Clearly write team name or unit name you wish to join, referring to
the Center's website below.
