AAi's public short course  Machine Learning - an Introduction   may be of 
interest to you or others in your organisation or network.

This course introduces a range of fundamental techniques for machine learning. 
It is offered at an introductory level and it is suitable for general audiences 
with only some technical background in computer programming. The course starts 
with recalls of probability and linear algebra and continues to cover:
*

classification
*       maximum likelihood estimation
*       the support vector machine

The course offers numerous examples in the MATLAB programming environment and a 
demonstration of the WEKA classification software.

This program is particularly useful for people who work in and for:
*

industry, government or other entities who want to gain an appreciation of the 
technical insights of statistical machine learning beyond "black-box" 
utilisation of commercial software
*       Students, researchers and academics

Course outcomes - Upon completion of this course students will:
*

Outcome 1: appreciate the range of techniques covered
*       Outcome 2: be able to read other sources and topics in autonomy

Presenter
Massimo Piccardi is a Professor of Computer Systems with the Faculty of 
Engineering and Information Technology at University of Technology, Sydney 
(UTS), that he joined in January 2002 as an associate professor. Previously, he 
was a senior lecturer/assistant professor with the Faculty of Engineering at 
University of Ferrara, Italy. At UTS, he serves as Co-Director of the iNEXT 
Research Centre, a research strength in innovative IT services and 
applications. His main research interests are in the areas of pattern 
recognition, computer vision, image and video analysis, with main applications 
to video surveillance, multimedia, and human-computer interaction (CHI). Over 
his career, Prof. Piccardi has been the author or co-author of over a hundred 
and twenty scientific papers in international journals and on conference 
proceedings and several book chapters. Since relocating to Australia from Italy 
in 2002, he has been the principal investigator of many advanced research 
projects including two ARC (Australian Research Council) Discovery Projects and 
an ARC Linkage Project, and a chief investigator in another Linkage Project and 
three Linkage Infrastructure Projects. Prof. Piccardi serves as an Associate 
Editor for journals Machine Vision and Applications and Image and Vision 
Computing and is a senior member of the IEEE, a member of the IEEE Computer 
Society and a member of the International Association for Pattern Recognition.
