Exactly.  I was in a local pawn shop here in Tampa over the weekend, and they had shelves and shelves of VHS players...must have been at least 50 units out on display, and no telling what they have in the back.  Top of the line models in lightly-used condition for $10-15 each.

Check your local pawn shops. They probably have decent old VCRs
stacked like cordwood that you could pick up for next to nothing.
(Eventually, they'll be collectibles but we're still in the late "vast
unwanted surplus" part of the cycle.)
