Rewind the tape to the beginning, then press play, then fast-forward the tape through to the end while still playing it (jn other words you'll see the video as you fast forward), then let it rewind for a few seconds, then press play again, then rewind the tape while still playing it. Unless you have sheared off one of the player heads (which -- sorry to say -- it sort of sounds like), this should clean the heads wonderfully.
