Im wondering if there is a lock file stopping the morercpthosts file
from being read? Only thinking out loud here.

You mean these :

[EMAIL PROTECTED] control]# ls *.lock -la
-rw------- 1 root root 0 Jun 23 09:27 locals.lock
-rw------- 1 root root 0 Jun 23 09:27
morercpthosts.lock
-rw------- 1 root root 0 Jun 23 09:25 rcpthosts.lock
-rw------- 1 root root 0 Jun 23 09:27
virtualdomains.lock

??

I have 2 machines. The /var/qmail/controls directory is an NFS export
from the customer facing machine. The internet facing machine mounts
this directory in read-only mode. I *thought* there was no reason to
have write access to that directory ... perhaps I'm mistaken?

It depends whether the files are updated on the nfs machine directly, or on the nfs client machine. If the nfs client machine adds domains, then the directory needs to be writable for the lock files.

Bill
