It depends whether the files are updated on the nfs machine directly, or on the nfs client machine. If the nfs client machine adds domains, then the directory needs to be writable for the lock files.

Gotcha.. the domains are only added on the customer facing machine, where the NFS export is. The internet facing machine only has write access to the domains directory for putting email in the boxes...

With regards to my problem, I've noticed (just now, actually) that the
/var/qmail/log/current file shows deliveries to the shoenerenvironmental
domain as this :

starting delivery 1708262: msg 1853410 to remote
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

where my working domains show this :

starting delivery 1712785: msg 1853424 to local
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

What does qmail use to get this info?

qmail thinks this domain is NOT local. For a domain to be considered local, it has to (in addition to being in rcpthosts or morercpthosts(.cdb):

1. Be in the locals file, and will go to system accounts

2. Or, be in the virtualdomains file, with a mapping to a specific user

3. If that user has an entry in /var/qmail/users/cdb (via the assign text file), then it will look to that directory *rather* than a system account.

My guess is that either your virtualdomains file or your assign file has an error.

Bill
