Just because /dev/modem points to /dev/ttyS1, doesn't mean it's really on ttyS1.  It just means someone/something made a link.  Find out the chipset on the modem.  Lucent winmodems are supported under Linux.  I'm using one in my notebook with the "linmodem" driver.  PCtel, another bit winmodem chipset maker, just announced they were going to do Linux drivers.

Subject: [techtalk] Modem

Hello,
I'm having trouble with my modem. It seems to be a winmodem, and these are not likely to run under Linux.
Under ms dos, it's at COM1, under Linux I received these information with ls -l /dev/modem: /dev/ttyS1
But isn't it a fact that ttyS1 is the same as COM2 under ms dos.
Is my modem in the wrong dev?
And does anyone know anything about adjusting a winmodem (Supra Express 56i PRO) to Linux? ------ I cannot download with ftp, well, because my modem does not work ;-).

Thank you very much for your help!
