"designed for opensource use" != "supported by opensource upstreams"

Linksys released the WRT1900 a few months ago with a lot of fanfare about how it was running OpenWRT, but didn't talk to anyone developing OpenWRT until after the release, and then they had a big binary blob driver.... It's getting close to being in shape now, but not quite there yet.

With the WRT1200 they have publicly said that they are trying to avoid the same mistake. They are working with an OpenWRT developer, but it's not upstream yet (but while it was announced at CES, is it actually available yet? if not, they may still have time to get it right)

It's one to keep an eye on, but I wouldn't consider it open enough to buy quite yet.

Now, DD-WRt is willing to include more in the way of binary blob drivers and vendor provided kernels that OpenWRT is, so there are some devices supported by DD-WRT than aren't supported by OpenWRT, so if you like DD-WRT take a look at it's compatibility info.

I'd like to point out the new Linksys WRT1200AC, introduced at CES. Seems
to have all the latest Wi-Fi hardware and is designed for opensource use.

Subject: [lopsa-tech] Wifi upgrade

Since my mail server is working now, it's time to break my home network
again, but in a different way.

I'm currently using a Soekris net4801 (running CentOS 4) as a
firewall/router/DHCP server for my home network and a WRT-54 for an
Access Point.I think it's time to move up to something a little newer.
I'm thinking about some sort of dd-wrt based box. What do people
recommend that is reliable, fast, supports gigabit ethernet, all the
modern consumer WiFi standards and optionally has a wall mounting kit?

What else should I be looking for?
