The most important thing, in my opinion, is that it *not* be a black box that you can't do anything to or about. To that extent, the Soekris that you have now is a pretty good thing. You could look for an updated version of that, like a PCEngines APU1D or APU1D4. If it supported a stock Debian release, I would enthusiastically recommend the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter Lite, a $99 box with gigabit and wifi and all manner of good things. But, it uses a branch of Debian that is not supported upstream, to the best of my knowledge.
