I'll add one more.

In classified environments it's quite common to take hard disk drives and put
them in a safe, for later use such as disaster recovery.

When a data loss situation occurs, there is the typical scramble for "real"
backup media. Unfortunately, such environments lend themselves to *significant*
institutional delays and approval steps before one can start retrieving and
using the actual backup media. But these environments still have the same
"meter is running" pressures to get productive again as any other environment.

More than once, I have observed that going back to the drive in the safe was a
successful procedural short cut to retrieving lost data. I wont say the length
of time in the safe was a decade or more, but it definitely exceeded your
typical three year warranty.
