Sometimes!  My wife works at a Research library and one of her current
projects is cataloging (and checking the cataloging) of old newspapers
from the 1800s and earlier.  Plenty of them have survived, even on
non-acid free paper.

Are the trying to digitize lots of them too?  You bet.  Belt's and
suspenders.
