It does not matter. Kids just adapt extremely rapidly. I have switched my
kids' laptops from Gnome 2 to Gnome 3 to XFCE and back to Gnome 3. They
express their likes and dislikes (they actually all prefer Gnome 3),

They have execellent taste. As a middle-aged computer jockey who has
been using systems since GEOS & GEM - GNOME3 (more correctly GNOME
Shell) is simply a fantastic, efficient, and elegant desktop
environment; it works, provides the required services for a great
desktop experience, and generally stays out of the way.

The best part about gnome is that a lot of people are using it, which means that things get fixed. I love the search everything from the hot corner, I realize this is a copy form a Mac apps, but it is truly the first truly intuitive thing I have seen on computers. Usually intuitive means "you'll get used to it".

Now my biggest issue with gnome is finding hidden windows. You go to the hot corner, everything gets minimised, so small that I cannot read what is inside the small windows, and they are all aligned in the order you opened the windows.... This, does not work. I remember where the xterm for server z is, I remember where my editor for file x is, etc... I remember where things are on the desktop, but not in what order I open them. As much as I hate to admit, this is one thing MS got right on Window, when you highlight an app from the tray, it shows you where on the desktop it is.

Oh, and now that I have tried the "windows raised only when clicking on window decoration" from XFCE, I want that, this was pure genius, I can no longer function with the old "window raised whenever clicked".
