We use NAGIOS and the same openmanage plugin as listed below, querying over
SNMP. It works really well for us. I've tried to persuade TrustWave
(formerly RedCondor) to enable this on their appliances, so I can monitor
them in the same way. I had a RAID battery out for several months that I
only discovered because I happened to be squatting down looking at an
adjacent server. If I had had openmmanage checking, I would have known in 5
minutes.

The pithy ruminations from Matt Lawrence on
<[lopsa-tech] OpenManage> were:
=> Yet another monitoring question. Since I work in an environment that is
=> almost exclusively Dell, and I'm looking for a monitoring solution, I'm
=> wondering if any of the popular monitoring solutions out there leverage
=> the various tools in the OpenManage family. It's a lot easier to tell

Nagios.

=> people they are required to install OMSA than to force them to install
=> other agents. I'm sure other monitoring solutions have better reporting
=> capabilities and much better user interfaces, so using those frameworks
=> with the Dell software as a back end could be a good thing.

There are some good Nagios plugins to query OpenManage, but of course that
requires nrpe or ssh access or some other method for the OpenManage data to
get back to Nagios.

I've been happy with:

http://exchange.nagios.org/directory/Plugins/Hardware/Server-Hardware/Dell/c
heck_openmanage/details

It does require a little server-specific tweaking. For example, machines w/o
PERC cards require that the openmanage check be configured to exclude some
storage components, or they will report as an error.
