I dropped my 4S so many times (and also it rode around in my pocket caseless enough) that the back glass edges got very chipped (amazed I didn’t star-crack the back with some of the drops I’ve had!) and (the deal-killer) the clear glass over the camera got a big scratch on it (obv not Gorilla Glass!) So I took it into the local Apple Store (Freehold NJ) and they had it changed in about 3 min’s with a new back glass for around $35.00. (The store was packed too, including the Genius Bar, but I had made a timed appt.) I was very impressed at the level and speed of customer service, as well as the price. (FWIW, they cannot change out the front glass, so if that breaks – new phone time.)

The 5 series has glass only on the front (tiny rear panels not withstanding), and the corners of the glass are far more protected than on the 4. The repair cost of the glass should be considered as part of the cost of the phone. That said, the aluminum frame of the 5's is far more susceptible to dents and scratches than the steel frame of the 4 series, but any issues there are purely cosmetic.
