iPhone updates tend to make the phone slower and slower until it becomes unusable. My 3G lasted me 3 years, but functions like maps were unusable by the time I upgraded to a 4s.
So, the 4s will be obsolete sooner than the 5s. If your refresh period is 2 years, it should be fine.
