We use the Brother P-Touch industrial desktop range.
It's connected to a PC which runs their software including the label
database, accessed from our desktops using VNC. It's not too offensive
and does the job. In our environ we don't have to be very mobile, and
can pre-print the labels for most jobs, so haven't the need for
handheld.
The laminated labels are good, and 18/24mm can contain a lot of
information.
