Well I discovered the problem was the 32 gig memory card was
dying. Windows checkdisk said it was ok but when I tried to format
it both using a pc or phone the card could not be formatted. When
music player tried to refresh the library errors came up prompting me
to retry or data would be lost. When I used an old 16 gig card the
music player when launched reported it was reparing a corrupt library.
perhaps that is why the gost albums and artists could not be removed
in the first place.
The odd thing is there are no errors copying to or reading from the
card either with file manager or a card reader. it's a pity that
when an error is displayed the phone often beeps making it almost
impossible to hear what talks is saying
