Sometimes I could clear a message like that by turning off and on again. Like 
Stephen said you may need to remove some data or even upgrade your firmware.

Stephen,

The message reads: "Memory full. Close some applications and try
again." This occurs when I'm trying to send an SMS, nowhere else.

Here are the various memory stats;

Phone: 18MB in use, 101MB free
Memory card: 59MB in use, 1816MB free

I'm completely puzzled.
