I don't think Eleanor's advice had anything to do with whether someone
has little or no vision. I recommend to people whether they're blind or
sighted that if it isn't broken, don't fix it. Unless you're having
trouble or you know there's something you want in an update then don't
bother. If you do want an update then make sure you have a good back up,
know how to reverse the update if you need to and make sure you have the
requisite skills or assistance if things don't go well. Again, this
advice is for the blind and sighted a like.

It is a fact though that with access technology, there is another layer
of complexity on our phones. Whenever I update firmware, a advice driver
or even just an application, I must admit I have some apprehension as to
whether something will change to interfere with my accessibility. I'm
more than willing to work with an access technology vendor or an
application's author to fix something, but sometimes I just want to use
a phone to make a call and don't want to fight an accessibility battle
every time there's an update to an application that appears to be
working just fine the way it is.

This is all just my $0.02. Obviously anyone is able to update their
phone, software and firmware any time they want, but if someone asks my
opinion, whether they're sighted or not, the above is what I'll tell
them. I wouldn't tell someone to just blindly update their phone on the
off chance that there's some little improvement in there that you might
find useful. IMHO, the risks are just too great.
