Probably because a mini-roundabout is basically one where you imagine the
island there, the island isn't physically present (other than maybe a
cushion in the middle of the road to give the island some tactility without
being unyielding to wayward vehicles).  Basically an indication to turn
around oncoming traffic instead of cutting off the corner.

You'd first have to make mini-roundabouts not be a thing in the ground
truth for that to be particularly reasonable.
