For crosswalks, you can still use left/right, based on the direction of the way(s) the node is part of. The only special case: When the way is split at the crosswalk, and the direction of one of the ways is reversed for some reason. But in this case, you would simply reverse one of the ways again to ensure that both point in the same direction. Add some editor warnings for QA.
