The performance problem is not the CPU.  It is the memory.  I run lots of 
versions of Linux on PIII 550s.  The memory is
the key, 64MB is way too small.

 If you upgrade it to 256 or 512mb your results will be like having a brand new 
computer, compared to running anything
thing on 64MB.

Well, except for MS-DOS, the performance of DOS will be the same for 64MB and 
512MB RAM.
