hmmm. I'm using FreeBSD since years for my desktop with the minimal fluxbox windowmanager. FreeBSD is a complete Unix system, not "just" a kernel (don't flame me). Has an excellent software repository with about 14.000 programs you can really easily compile from source, and runs smooth on old hardware. And if you need it: You can also use the Linux binary compatibility ABIa, e.g. for Skype There is a new 'distro' out there: http://www.pcbsd.org Installed it last weekend and it's really nice and easy. give it a try. The only real heavy disadvantage of FreeBSD : It has no native flashplayer :-) Neverthless a word of caution: When you plan to use a Unix/Linux system you have to investigate time & energy. It's not point'n click. But in the end you'll have a system perfectly fitting you needs. And you don't have to wait for patchdays. And your friends won't ask you for help with their winmachines:-) So you have more time.
