Details of this are on the HMRC website here:
<https://www.gov.uk/guidance/outward-processing-relief-opr>

I did not know about this when I sent my mic back for recalibration (as
a repair many years earlier hadn't been caught), and was charged duty
and VAT on its return. I managed to find enough documentation from
when I bought it twelve years ago to challenge this, and HMRC refunded
the money - but I didn't get the ParcelForce admin charge back.
ParcelForce and HMRC each said the other would repay it, and so neither
would in practice!
