You can sync two Tascam DR-680's and get 12 usable channels with matching pre-amps and completely digital gain.
I wonder if the new Zoom is really digitally controlled gain or just a digital display of an analog value. You could find out by recording a tone, moving the gain knob slowly, then looking for a smooth or step-wise response in the recording.
