Exactly. One microphone per speaker, plus spots as necessary.

As does e.g. 22.2. At least 5.1 had *some* paradigm behind it, or
could pretend to have one. That can't be said of any of the 'umpteen
speakers' formats.

Which paradigm do you mean? I've read somewhere (I guess in the ITU recommendation) that the content in the surrounds should be decorrelated from L and R, but that's about all...
