Hi all...

It seems that Auro 3D is increasingly establishing itself as the available "de facto" 3D audio format in use for (3D) music recordings.

Currently more than 200 albums have been recorded in the Auro 8.0, or Auro 9.1 format, only a few of them in the Auro 10.1 format which combines the third layer (Top Layer, or sometimes called the "Voice of God" channel) directly above the listener. But since human beings are less sensitive for sounds coming from above, the top layer is almost only useful for fly-overs, or certain special effects, not immediately necessary in music. Even the reproduction of music recorded in reverberant areas like live concerts do not require the Top Layer because there are less reflections coming from there, even in a church when recording classical music. So the Auro 9.1 format is ideal for music in immersive sound. The genres recorded in these 200 albums include not only classical music, but everything from, Jazz, Pop, Rock, and even Dance.

The Ambisonics community might have to speed up certain developments if you want to stay competitive.

- Whereas there are some (main) microphones for recording in Auro 8.0/9.0/10.0 format available, there doesn't seem to happen enough < practical > work related to HOA microphones. The "4th order" Eigenmike is on the market, but has some practical limitations concerning noise, frequency range, aliasing etc.

Proposal: It might make more sense to develop some cheaper and more practical spherical array microphones for 2nd order (12 capsules) or 3rd order (20 capsules needed, I believe...). To add some 4th order information in an area of about 1.5 octaves (because of "low frequency noise" and spatial aliasing at high frequencies) doesn't seem to improve things a lot; so why not concentrate on 2nd/3rd order and simplify the mike design instead?

- TOA can be decoded to the different variations of the Auro format. FOA is not detailled enough, in this case...

- Auro 9.1 and above could be used for computer game audio and VR, as well. (Codemasters tried to introduce "7.13D", as we might remember. Auro is clearly superiour, because more balanced.)

Discussion and suggestions welcome and expected...

Best regards,

Stefan
