Hello everyone,

I've been lurking this list for a while and I would like to have some
help to approach the Ambisonic technique.
I used pretty much all kind of multichannel configurations during the
years and currently I'm using mainly my own technique. I never
approached Ambisonic for its complexity and difficulty to "afford" to
buy one of those microphones.
Is time for me to start investigating and experimenting with it and I
would like to know a bit more from you about the actual microphones
available on the market.

As far as I understand there are just few companies producing these and
apart from the price I would like to know what is their self noise,
sound and reliability on the field, resistance to humidity and
environment and so on.
So far, I've got news about the existence of the following:

Soundfield ST450
Core Sound Tetramic Microphone

you can find reviews for both on the web, some with measurements included.

Oktava MK012AM
AGM MR1

both arrays are really huge, so their usefulness is debatable. the agm should have amazing single-capsule performance (it's four dpas after all), but i doubt it's very good as a whole, and it's pretty much unavailable. plus the cost is at least that of four 4011, which makes all other offers look very good in comparison.

if you want to get your feet wet wrt ambisonic recordings, it's pretty much the tetramic, or possibly the brahma, which comes in a very compelling package with recorder included, but which i haven't used yet.

best,

jörn
