how do you think it can be

Hm... in 1978. I didn't know about this one before, thanks for the info.
Q-Sound or similar processes were not commercially available at that time.
Have you checked if this YMO recording is quadraphonic? Some quad
discussion group might know about his.
Check out this track from Isao Tomita's version of Holst's Planets,
especially
the track Mercury:

Planets was released in 1976 and it is originally a quad mix. I have a Dolby
Surround CD version of it, which doesn't do right to the quad version.
I understand that Tomita did all the spatial panning with the synthesizers
he used.
If your question is how this effect can be recreated, check out:

There were also processes called Spatializer, Sensaura and Roland RSS.
I don't know whatever happened to them.
The Audio & Design Ambisonic Transcoder could also do a very similar effect,
it can give a wide stereo image beyond the speakers.
The imaging isn't as pinpointed as with HRTF based processing, what the
previously mentioned systems represent.
The Transcoder was used for on some of the tracks on the Tina Turner album
Break every rule, see here for more info:
