I should also add that we took this stuff into OggPCM a while back. The main definition is at: http://wiki.xiph.org/OggPCM . The common discrete and ambisonic mappings can be found there, with short descriptions, but the real treat is the companion document at http://wiki.xiph.org/Channel_mapping_examples where I mapped just about every format in existence to what we came up with in channel semantics.

Do take a look at it and disseminate the work if right.
