How do you do this? View->View Message Body As does not offer this
possibility. If you can do that, that smells of an add-on.

As I previously explained:

If I make the selection for an individual message, it applies only
to that message.

You didn't write how you made the selection for the content. There are 2
possibilities. In the main window of SM
1) http://www.triffids.de/pub/screenshot/sm171217.png
This is my way because I use the message pane.

or in window generated by double-click in the thread pane.
2) http://www.triffids.de/pub/screenshot/sm171217-b.png

I have only recently discovered 2) because I use the message pane for
reading. The screenshots are there to minimize the risk of misunderstanding.

Here I assume you meant 2).

I hardly ever view messages in a separate window ("open" them). It's extra hassle opening and closing windows when I can read messages perfectly well in the preview pane. On very rare occasions when I want to have two messages open at once, I'll "open" one in a separate window.

I normally have the three-pane layout: account and folder list on the left, message list on the top right, and preview pane (what some users call the "message pane") at the bottom right, occupying most of the screen.

To select an account, I left-single-click the name in the account and folder list (I suppose a right-click would also do, but it also pulls up an unwelcome context menu). Then I pull down View Message Body As from the top menu as you've illustrated.

To select an individual message, I select it either in the account and folder list or in the message list. Then I pull down View | Message Body As... from the top menu as you've illustrated. AFAIK the selection method is irrelevant for this or any other purpose.

In the second case, the choice becomes the default for that account.

True, but also for all accounts.

Now that you mention it, yes.

I will not speak for 2) because I haven't used it in the past and thus
don't know the behavior of ancient SMs like yours. I could only speak
for my current SM. The behavior may have changed or there may be a bug.
Not too unlikely for Trunk. :)

Really? The most recent stable version 2.49.1 is "ancient"? On what planet? :-)
