Oh yes, NVidia on XP. I have that very same issue with an NV8200.

In rare cases (maybe one of 70 runs?) there is no crash and I can zoom in
on the Moon or planets, even Jupiter with its moons' shadows work. But
rarely:-(.

No solution known to me, but I accept XP is dead in the eyes of its
developers, and with limited resources it's too tedious to track it down.
If you find a solution, would be fine to know it.

Of course, trying a much simpler shader may help. Are you comfortable with
GLSL experiments?
