A normal update does not take long unless there are a lot of changes.
However if there is a problem I do a clean build to make sure that I have no 
inbuilt errors.
That meeans downloading the specific branch specified fully.

Make sure you are using a shared repository; that makes branching new locations 
trivially small - this one would have been less than 10k for you.

This even makes it look more difficult than it really is, as all most people 
need to do (me included) is to build the non-trunk branches, as opposed to the 
development the tutorial shows.
