I am looking at a building that has a 16' ceiling in MOST areas. There is a small 250sf entry vestibule that has a 24' ceiling. The vestibule is separated from the interior by walls and doors, but they are not fire rated (so it would not meet separation requirements for a Room Design approach per 13, 2016 ed 11.2.3.3). The vestibule has sprinklers at its high ceiling level.
Is the unrated wall enough of a separation (draft curtain) between the ceiling levels to allow for a QR reduction in the area/density calc for the main floor? Would it be required to use a 1500sf operating area under the vestibule without regard to the walls? Thanks! Matt Grise
