I believe 4’ wide applies to objects more than 3’ below the sprinkler, objects above that have to comply with either the three times rule or the checkerboard pattern figures that precede that section (analogous to the NFPA objects near the sprinkler tables eg distance to edge vs distance allowed below deflector).
