Having worked most of my career on the 'left' coast, I can confirm Ryan's remarks,

In one jurisdiction there was a requirement that discharge from a fire pump had to be captured, treated, and returned to the reservoir after the testing confirmed that the water was 'clean.'

As you may imagine the already high cost of a fire pump was increased by this requirement.

Not per NFPA 20.  It is provided as an option.  Certain jurisdictions such as on the Left coast may have requirements to minimize water wastage.  I’ll let them chime further.

I understand it's allowed, but is it required? Thank you.

Return to source or return to reservoir is specifically allowed both for test header- and pressure relief valve discharge per NFPA 20 (2022) Sections 4.20.6, 4.20.7, and 4.20.8 with appropriate provisions.

Is there a  code requirement to return discharge of the fire pumps to the water tank?
