As is normal for me, I’m late to the party.

I won’t try to speak for what NFPA 13 requires or doesn’t require, but a
couple thoughts:

  * If this were a domestic drain pipe, would it require seismic protection?
  * What’s in the best interest of your client? If that drain line is
damaged by earthquake and the damage goes undetected, it will become very
detected the next time the drain system is used.

Now back to my regularly scheduled program.

I agree with all in this case.

Low point drains and inspection’s test can cause water damage in earthquakes.
In Anthony C.’s home turf the most common break I saw in what our E-376 calls
tilt-up town were in these lines. 1” tee’d over to wall, a 90 down, and almost
immediately a 4” piece of unistrut and clamp. Quite rigid. The 1” broke
immensely above clamp, on one side or other of 90. Lots of these. Damage?
Dpepeded on rack locations and value of stock.

Steve,

three points here.

  * §18.4.1 requires clearance for a drain extending through a wall, floor,
platform, foundations.

  * §18.5.1.6 omits any bracing requirements for drain piping downstream of
the drain valve.

  * It isn't a branch line so restraint is not required. §18.6.4

All references from the 2022 edition of -13.

So my thought is that if you have the required clearance when your piping
crosses the seismic joint, nothing further is needed.

This is my opinion only.

All (especially Californicators):

We have to cross a seismic joint with the piping that supplies a combination
standpipe in a mid-rise building (no PRV’s to test). As a combo, there’s a
collection pipe for sectional test and drain discharge, and for reasons
peculiar to this building, our first choice is to bring the gang drain back to
the riser room, as it’s the only place with a SS trap in the basement. We’re
trying to decide whether a seismic joint is required of the drain pipe, which
is normally dry and never under system pressure in any case. I reckon I
should know this, but I don’t think we’ve had to address this condition in
forever, maybe never.
