Sorry Ken, it was a typo I was applying 8.15.1.6 NOT 8.15.1.5 sounds like you have the same feeling I do

From: Ken Wagoner <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, August 11, 2022 12:43 PM To: Discussion list on issues relating to automatic fire sprinklers <[email protected]>; Rocci 3 Cetani <[email protected]> Subject: [Sprinklerforum] Re: combustible concealed spaces Rocci, here are my thoughts for whatever they're worth. * Based on your description I speculate that 8.15.1.5 does not apply because the space is concealead, rather than localized exposed. * If the AHJ would consider the CLT as the equivalent of "wood joist construction" then the more applicable section would appear to be 8.15.1.6, and the use of sprinklers which are listed for such use would be appropriate. * Standard spray sprinklers would raise the issue of the discharge pattern not being fully developed as a clearance of 18" below the deflector is required, and it doesn't appear that is present in what you've described. See §8.5.5.1 and Figure A.8.5.5.1. So I would recommend something similar to the Reliable KFR-CCS (or from another manufacturer), as it is listed for the protection of such spaces, where the depth is 36" or less. From the data sheet published by Reliable the maximum coverage areas are either 196 ft² for 256 ft² for spaces less or more than 18" deep, respectively. That's my perspective. sincerely, Ken Wagoner, SET Parsley Consulting 500 West Mechanic Street Harrisonville, Missouri 64701-2235 Phone: (760) 745-6181 Visit the website<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__linkprotect.cudasvc.com_url-3Fa-3Dhttp-253a-252f-252fwww.parsleyconsulting.com-252f-26c-3DE-2C1-2CY5zKJKPEh1mBEBqSR-2DVE9cUKl5y-2DeyP8BpvmE-5F5j9ZqW2eJbNphYzrCMBZ-2D2YuX6d-2DRRkHI4gQ1FV-2DcvOeCfRC58uZS9NiToZv2mx7909oCqLvCW-5Fn5hDHeK-26typo-3D1&d=DwMFaQ&c=euGZstcaTDllvimEN8b7jXrwqOf-v5A_CdpgnVfiiMM&r=hLXh1DXRDwJ3oz4y7iNesSsetYhUUV0wawfPGfwmYxQ&m=jKWutFex1GJEmKgqGUIpWXBP-Tng9pKQp4ajU4KEcog&s=JLUsZKzB1XX3QZa5ULhw-nVF4_Vgs0M8P-SwUabwcD0&e=> On 8/11/2022 12:35 PM, Rocci 3 Cetani wrote: Ok we have a situation where the structure is CLT (cross laminated timber) with a few glue lams. the space between the CLT and the ceiling is only 24” so I was planning on using the reliable KRF sprinkler because it’s a combustible concealed space but it technically doesn’t comply with NFPA 13 8.15.1.5 because it isn’t wood truss, wood joist or bar joist construction….. The only thing it complies with is the space is less than 36” and the upper surface (the CLT) is combustible. Because of the depth of the space should I still go with the concealed space sprinklers or use standard spray?
