Today starts day 1 of a massive joe-job against my domain.

Today also starts day 1 of my crusade to do something to help the problem.

I feel that large providers of high speed internet services (Cable / DSL) need to do more to protect their customers.

If the Cable / DSL providers were able to secure their networks so unauthorized use of their customers computers was blocked / prohibited, I don't think we would have much of a spam problem anymore.

Take the current Habeas attack.  They are most likely having trouble tracking down who is responsible due to the zombie computers used to send the spam.  If the major providers did more to protect their customers and secure their networks the spammers would be forced to buy servers and / or use their OWN equipment, not something they own by hacking.  Forcing them to use their own equipement would allow us to easily block based on IP address.

The spammers are using our own weapons (our PCs) to wage war on the world.  People need to be more aware of the REAL problem that we are all facing.  The open relay problem of the 90s is not even close to the zombie cable spammers we face today.

Currently if you attempt to block by IP address, you end up blocking aunt Betty on her cable modem and she gets real upset when she can't send her e-mail forwards to her family.

I can not imagine what it would be like to work for an abuse dept. at an internet company and receive hundreds or thousands of complaints about customers computers being hijacked or turned into spam zombies.
