To some degree that's like asking how many files can you store before a server starts to run out of space.


A lot of this has to do with your hardware and your mail delivery rate, ie: how much spare CPU time you have, and the complexity of the rules you're adding

In general, you can add quite a large number of simple text-string rules without a significant impact on a lightly loaded server.

However, rules with lots of backtracking add a lot more overhead than a simpler rule.

In general each and every rule adds more processing time. If your server is already overloaded, adding rules will hurt it as it will increase the amount of backlogged mail.

If your server is very slack and has lots of available CPU time between messages, adding large numbers of rules won't really be noticeable.
