This is something I have struggled with for a while. We can all block spam. It's really not that hard anymore with great tools like SA. And there are dozens of commercial solutions too. Therefore, we can all make it harder for spammers to reach actual people and therefore make it more expensive. But come on, spamming is so cheap that it's going to take a sizable percentage of people blocking spam very successfully to put the cost of such methods out of reach to a spammer. And we all hate to just sit on our hands waiting for the rest of the world to jump on the spam blocking bandwagon. The only kind of spam legislation I support is the kind that eliminates fraudulent emails. The kind with false from-addresses, illegal get rich quick schemes, ebay scams, etc. That of course will eliminate a certain level of the nastiest junk we get ... but it won't eliminate it all. Sometimes I think we're just better off blocking it for those that want it and leaving it at that. I mean, it's no different than snail mail. If I don't want to receive junk snail mail I could pay someone to sift through it and give me only what I want. There are some that don't mind sifting through their snail mail and determining for themselves what's junk and what's not. And they should be free to do so. Sometimes I prefer this free-market approach; other times, I just want to blow every spammer to tiny bits. cheers, Colin Colin A.
