I think you may be misinterpreting the auto_whitelist_path option. For instance, if you have a line in local.cf like:
auto_whitelist_path /var/spool/spamassassin/auto-whitelist then /var/spool/spamassassin/auto-whitelist is not a directory. Instead, it means that SA will create a file in /var/spool/spamassassin named auto-whitelist.db (I don't totally understand why it appends .db, but I gather that's how the perl DB stuff works). In my experience, you don't even need to create an empty file with correct permission. You do, however, need to make sure the /var/spool/spamassassin directory is writeable by the user that spamd is running as.
