You missed the important part which was in Daniel's message. I will reproduce it here. | body MY_CONSONANT_4 /[^aeiou]{4}/ The counting is done by perl's regular expression code. See the "{4}" in the expression? That matches exactly four of the previous pattern. The _# is just part of the name and in this case the name matches up with the number counted in the perl RE.
